Person who chants the ‘adhān, or Islamic call to prayer. The first was an Abyssinian slave and early convert named Bilāl. Later, some large mosques employed as many as 20, and in the Ottoman empire they banded into guilds. Once commanding great respect, their role in modern times has diminished owing to the use of recorded ‘adhān.
